JAMES RATCLIFF SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR RAPE IN TELFORD
A man has been formally convicted of a serious sexual assault and received a five-year prison sentence following a trial held at Shrewsbury Crown Court.James Ratcliff, aged 36 and a resident of Shawfield Close in Sutton Hill, Telford, was found guilty by a jury on Tuesday, May 4th.
The court subsequently sentenced him on Friday, July 2nd, and also ordered that he be registered as a sex offender.
The criminal act took place in the early hours of November 24, 2018, within the town of Oakengates, which is part of Telford.
According to reports, the incident unfolded when the victim was walking away from a nightclub in Oakengates, accompanied by a friend.
During this walk, Ratcliff approached her and engaged her in conversation briefly.
After talking for a moment, he managed to detach her from her friend and led her into an alleyway.
It was there that Ratcliff committed the rape.
The victim reported the assault to the authorities, which led to immediate police intervention.
Ratcliff’s arrest came relatively shortly after the offence was committed, as law enforcement acted swiftly following the report.
Following the conclusion of the trial and his conviction, Detective Sergeant Jon Taylor provided a statement, expressing the police department’s stance.
He stated, “We welcome this conviction and I hope it offers some comfort to the victim who bravely came forward so we could investigate the offence fully.” He emphasized that such incidents, while rare, are taken very seriously by the police.
Detective Sergeant Taylor further added, “Despite these types of incident being rare, I hope this conviction will provide reassurance to all our communities that we will always investigate sexual offences and do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.” The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in Telford and surrounding areas to ensure safety and secure justice for victims of sexual crimes.
