OFFENDER CONVICTED OF BRUTAL DOMESTIC HOMICIDE
James Munro, an oil industry worker plagued by jealousy, was found guilty of the murder of his fiancée Kim Campbell, whom he fatally stabbed multiple times in their bathtub. The court described the attack as an 'unsparing slaughter,' revealing that Munro caused 27 stab wounds that damaged vital blood vessels, lung tissue, and sliced her skull to the bone.
The presiding judge, Lord Uist, characterized Munro as an 'evil and violent man.' Munro had a history of violence, including a prior six-year sentence for attacking his then-wife in a similar manner, leaving her with lifelong scars and chasing her onto the street.
The killing was driven by jealousy after Munro discovered holiday photographs showing Ms Campbell with another man.
During the trial, Munro presented a false account claiming that Ms Campbell pushed him into the bath and held a knife during their struggle, a story that conflicted with police reports.
The court considered a minimum sentence of 20 years before parole, but Munro was ultimately given a life sentence.
Witness testimony included that of his then-eight-year-old son, who recounted hearing his mother scream and witnessing the attack after fleeing in pajamas to seek help.
Prosecutors also described Munro’s deceptive behavior following the crime, including inflicting self-wounds and scattering drugs to mimic an attempted suicide to mislead investigators.
