JAMES MAXWELL FROM FIFE SENTENCED FOR GUN, AMMUNITION, AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In a detailed court proceeding held at the High Court in Edinburgh, James Maxwell, a resident of Fife, was formally sentenced after pleading guilty to multiple serious charges involving firearms, ammunition, and child pornography. The case revealed disturbing details about Maxwell’s illegal activities, which included attempting to acquire a firearm and a significant quantity of hollow point ammunition, as well as possessing explicit material involving minors and extreme pornography.

According to the court, Maxwell had used the dark web to purchase a Glock 17 pistol and 100 rounds of specialized ammunition from the United States. These items were shipped to his residence in Leven, Fife, concealed within household electronic devices. US law enforcement officials intercepted the package before it reached Maxwell, but he had already accessed the contents, including an instruction manual for the Glock pistol, which he had saved on his computer the day prior to his arrest.

During police interviews, Maxwell admitted that his mental health had deteriorated in October 2022, leading to suicidal thoughts. His online searches included queries about school holiday dates, the Dunblane school massacre, and primary schools in Glasgow. These searches, coupled with the type of ammunition ordered, raised concerns about potential harm to schoolchildren, especially considering the use of hollow point rounds designed to cause greater injury.

Judge Lord Ericht emphasized the gravity of Maxwell’s actions, noting that the amount and type of ammunition could have resulted in “an unimaginable horror” if used against school pupils. Maxwell was found to have no prior convictions but posed a significant risk to public safety due to his possession of prohibited weapons and explicit material involving minors and animals.

Maxwell was sentenced to a total of nine years in prison, with five years of custody followed by four years on license. During this period, he could be recalled to prison if he breached any conditions. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for seven years and to comply with notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 and the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.

In his sentencing remarks, Lord Ericht detailed the specific charges, including attempting to purchase and possess a Glock 17 pistol without a firearms license, attempting to import the weapon and ammunition illegally, and possessing explicit images and videos involving children and animals.
