JAMES HIGGINSON'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL CRUELTY IN WEYMOUTH: COURT SENTENCE AND COMMUNITY REACTION
James Higginson, a man with a troubling history that includes previous convictions for domestic violence, has been at the center of a disturbing case of animal cruelty in Weymouth. Over a period spanning from March to September 2023, Higginson carried out a series of brutal attacks on three beloved cats named Tiggy, Sushi, and Chase, while his former partner was away at work. The severity of his actions resulted in the tragic deaths of Tiggy and Sushi, with veterinary reports confirming that both cats succumbed to repeated blunt force trauma inflicted during these assaults. In the summer of 2023, Tiggy was found dead, and shortly thereafter, Sushi was also discovered with injuries that proved fatal. The vet reports detailed the injuries as consistent with deliberate cruelty, highlighting the brutality of the attacks. Chase, another of the cats, was later brought to the same veterinary clinic with a swollen face and a bloody eye, prompting the RSPCA to become involved. Concerned for the animal’s safety, authorities seized Chase to protect him from further harm.
The ex-partner of Higginson recounted the distressing discovery of Tiggy’s lifeless body on June 6, 2023, and Sushi’s on August 12, 2023. Both incidents were marked by injuries that clearly indicated intentional harm, further emphasizing the malicious nature of Higginson’s actions. Court proceedings revealed that the cruelty persisted over several months, with neighbors hearing disturbing sounds emanating from Higginson’s flat. One neighbor reported overhearing a male voice screaming, “how do you like this, how does this feel, stupid bitch, fucking stop it,” which added a chilling context to the case.
The ex-partner described the entire ordeal as part of a broader campaign of domestic abuse and cruelty, which extended to the animals as well. Higginson initially denied any involvement in the charges brought against him but eventually pleaded guilty, acknowledging his guilt in the matter. The court sentenced him to a 15-month prison term, suspended, along with a fine of £500 to cover costs. Additionally, Higginson was banned from owning or caring for any animals for a period of 20 years, a measure intended to prevent further abuse.
During the sentencing, Recorder Patrick Mason expressed his disappointment in Higginson’s actions, stating that he should be “ashamed” of what he had done. The judge also noted Higginson’s emotional immaturity at the age of 18 and suggested that there was potential for rehabilitation, given his employment prospects. Despite the legal outcome, Higginson’s ex-partner voiced her outrage, stating, “I don’t think anyone who hurts animals should be walking free – I think it is disgusting. Because he didn’t get prison it shows people can do what they want and get away with it.” She reflected on how the abuse was also a way for Higginson to hurt her during their domestic violence campaign and expressed her hope for justice, even though the sentence was not as severe as she believed it should have been.
This case underscores the serious issue of animal cruelty linked to domestic violence, highlighting the importance of legal intervention and community awareness. While Higginson’s sentence was suspended, the community and the victim remain deeply affected by the events, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance and support for victims of abuse and cruelty in Weymouth.
