JAMES HEYWOOD OF TELFORD SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR ABUSING YOUNG GIRLS IN HADLEY AND TELFORD
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Telford and the surrounding area, James Heywood, a former publican from Telford, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of three young girls.The crimes, which spanned over two decades, included grooming, rape, and indecent assault, and have left lasting scars on the victims.
Heywood, aged 69 and residing in Bader Close, Apley, Telford, was found guilty after a detailed trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court.
The court heard that he had systematically groomed his victims, manipulating them into engaging in sexual activities.
The charges against him included three counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecency with a child, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of indecency with a child, and one count of sexual activity with a child under the age of 13.
These charges were described by the court as representative of the severity and pattern of his offending.
Heywood vehemently denied all allegations, and the jury acquitted him of three of the charges he faced.
Despite his denial, the evidence presented was compelling enough to secure a conviction.
Judge Peter Barrie addressed the court, emphasizing the profound and enduring impact of Heywood’s actions on his victims.
He stated that Heywood had caused them significant and lasting unhappiness, highlighting the predatory nature of his conduct.
Prosecutor Mr.
Philip Beardwell detailed that the first two victims, now women, were abused in the 1990s when they were just 13 and 14 years old.
The third victim’s abuse began more recently, when she was only 11.
During the proceedings, emotional victim impact statements were read aloud, revealing the deep scars left by Heywood’s crimes.
One victim described suffering from physical and psychological effects, including an eating disorder, insecurity, nightmares, and difficulties forming relationships.
Another victim disclosed that she had self-harmed, battled an eating disorder, and even contemplated suicide during her teenage years.
The third victim was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, experiencing flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
One of the victims poignantly remarked, “Part of my childhood was taken away,” underscoring the profound personal toll of Heywood’s actions.
Judge Barrie condemned Heywood’s conduct as predatory, noting that his grooming and manipulation deprived his victims of the ability to make genuine and informed choices about their lives.
He commended the bravery of the victims, especially the one who reported the abuse after sensing that Heywood might be doing it again.
In sentencing, Judge Barrie stated that the case contained deeply disturbing aspects, and the victim impact statements were both moving and distressing.
He emphasized that Heywood’s actions had caused significant and lasting harm.
As part of the sentence, Heywood will serve half of his 16-year term in custody, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the court’s recognition of the enduring damage inflicted upon his victims.
