JAMES GILL TARGETS RU GELEY SCHOOLGIRLS IN STAFFORDSHIRE AND FACES COMMUNITY ORDER

In December 2014, a disturbing case emerged involving James Gill, a man from Great Haywood near Stafford, who engaged in a series of alarming and predatory behaviors targeting young girls in the Staffordshire area, specifically in Rugeley. The Stafford Crown Court heard that Gill, aged 26, was often seen driving his yellow works van through neighborhoods where he knew schoolgirls would be present, particularly during times when they were likely to be alone and vulnerable.

Over a span of several months, between July and October of the previous year, Gill committed three separate acts of indecent exposure directed at school-aged girls in Rugeley. The victims, who were shocked and terrified by his actions, recounted their experiences during the court proceedings. Prosecutor Mr. Stefan Kolodynski emphasized the distress caused to these young girls, highlighting the severity of Gill’s misconduct.

Gill, residing on Lichfield Drive in Great Haywood, pleaded guilty to three charges of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16. His actions prompted a serious legal response, resulting in a three-year community order. As part of his sentence, Gill was mandated to participate in a sex offender treatment program, and he was ordered to register as a sex offender with the police for a period of five years. Additionally, he was prohibited from loitering near playgrounds, schools, or leisure facilities, and was barred from making any unauthorized contact with children under 16.

During the sentencing, Recorder Mr. P R Cooke addressed Gill directly, remarking on his troubling behavior. He noted that Gill’s conduct appeared to be a manifestation of personal struggles, including financial difficulties, cannabis abuse, and relationship issues, which seemingly led to a loss of control over his sexual urges. The judge expressed disappointment and concern over the impact of Gill’s actions on the young victims, emphasizing that such behavior has the potential to cause lasting psychological harm and fear among children.

One of the victims, a 13-year-old girl who chose to read her victim impact statement aloud in court, described her ongoing fears and mistrust. She stated, “I have been scared to go out on my own in case this happens again. I thought you were going to kidnap us and kill us. I don’t trust any men except my dad and my granddad. That’s all your fault. You have destroyed a long-standing friendship—thanks for that.”

Details of the offenses revealed that they occurred on July 29, September 22, and October 12. The last incident was particularly alarming, as the father of one of the victims took it upon himself to search for Gill’s yellow van after the incident. He managed to locate the vehicle and recorded its registration number. Gill was subsequently arrested the following day.

Defense lawyer Mr. Neil Gerrity expressed remorse on Gill’s behalf, stating, “He is rightly ashamed and embarrassed by his conduct. This is a first step to getting help and making sure this never happens again.” The case underscores the importance of community vigilance and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to protect vulnerable children from predatory behavior in Staffordshire.
