YATE SEX OFFENDER JACK SMOOTHY JAILED FOR ABUSING 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Yate, a 22-year-old man named Jack Smoothy has been sentenced to 28 months in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl. The incident occurred just months after police had issued warnings to Smoothy to stay away from young teenagers, highlighting a troubling pattern of behavior that had already drawn police attention.According to court reports, Smoothy initiated contact with the young girl via Facebook, where he began grooming her. The situation escalated when, in October, the girl traveled to his family home in Yate. There, the two engaged in sexual activity. The girl, whose identity is protected by law, also met Smoothy’s parents during this visit. Less than a week later, the girl and Smoothy were seen together at The Galleries shopping centre in Bristol. It was at this point that her grandmother recognized her and confronted Smoothy, informing him that the girl was only 12 years old.
In a bizarre twist, Smoothy claimed that both he and the girl believed she was pregnant, which led him to post a five-minute video on Facebook. In this video, he insulted the girl but also falsely claimed that she was “carrying his child,” adding a disturbing layer to the case. The police became involved after concerns were raised by the girl’s school, prompting an investigation into Smoothy’s activities.
The prosecutor highlighted that this was not an isolated incident. “This isn’t the first time the defendant has been spoken to by the police because the defendant has chosen to involve himself with young teenage girls,” they stated. Evidence showed that police had previously issued two child abduction notices to Smoothy, not because of any sexual contact but because his interactions with children under 16 had raised alarm among their parents. An officer had also advised him about his inappropriate behavior around teenagers.
During the court hearing, a statement from the girl’s mother was read aloud. She expressed her profound distress and anger, stating, “It has left me feeling sick to the core that this man has taken the innocence of my little girl. I am devastated that I have not been able to protect my child. He has ruined my daughter’s childhood, and I will never forgive him for that.”
Jack Smoothy pleaded guilty to one count of sexually assaulting a child under 13 by penetration. In addition, he admitted to breaching a restraining order by contacting another ex-girlfriend, aged 17, through a threatening Facebook message. The court sentenced him to 28 months in prison, with the judge indicating that he would not be eligible for automatic release after serving half of his sentence. His release would be subject to review by a parole board.
Furthermore, Smoothy was ordered to register as a sex offender and was placed under a sexual harm prevention order, which prohibits him from contacting teenage girls via the internet for the next ten years. This case underscores the ongoing concerns about online grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable young people from predators like Smoothy, whose actions have left a lasting scar on the community of Yate.
