CRAIG OGBORNE SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS IN BRISTOL AFTER YATE SEX OFFENCES
In a significant case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Yate, a 37-year-old man named Craig Ogborne has been handed a lengthy prison sentence following his conviction on multiple serious sexual offences. The sentencing took place at Bristol Crown Court on Friday, July 28, after a detailed trial that revealed the extent of his criminal actions.Ogborne was found guilty on Thursday, July 6, of six separate charges that spanned over the years 2018 and 2019. These included two counts of multiple rape against a woman, a charge of raping a child, causing a child to engage in sexual activity, and two additional counts of sexual assault involving a child. The court's verdict was the culmination of a thorough judicial process that uncovered disturbing details about his conduct.
Following his conviction, the court sentenced Ogborne to a prison term of 21 years. In addition to this, he was given an extended licence period of one year, which means he will be under supervision for a longer duration after his release. The court also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, aimed at restricting his future interactions and preventing any further harm. Furthermore, Ogborne was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, a measure designed to monitor and manage his presence in the community.
To protect the victims and prevent any contact, the judge issued restraining orders that prohibit Ogborne from approaching or communicating with any of those affected by his crimes. These legal measures underscore the severity of his offences and the court’s commitment to safeguarding the victims.
One of the children involved in the case shared a heartbreaking statement, revealing the profound psychological impact of the abuse. The child said, “I can’t sleep properly at night because, when I close my eyes, I see him, I hear him and ‘feel’ him.” The victim described how their life has been drastically affected, explaining that they often cancel plans with friends if they see someone resembling Ogborne or driving a vehicle similar to his, as it triggers fear and anxiety.
The second child victim also expressed ongoing distress, stating, “I still stay awake until the early hours until I am tired enough to sleep. I know I am in a safe place but I don’t feel safe when I wake up.” The child further explained their fear of encountering Ogborne again, saying, “I am scared to do most things because I didn’t want to risk seeing him.”
In addition to the children’s accounts, an adult victim described her emotional turmoil following the incidents. She expressed a “deep sense of embarrassment and shame” and admitted to struggling with communication, fearing that revealing her experience might lead to judgment or exposure. She said, “I don’t know how I am going to trust other people again,” highlighting the long-lasting emotional scars left by Ogborne’s actions.
This case underscores the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring offenders like Craig Ogborne to account. The community of Yate, along with wider society, is reminded of the devastating impact such crimes have on individuals and families, and the necessity of strict legal measures to prevent future harm.
