LANCASHIRE MAN JAILED FOR RAPE AFTER NIGHT OUT IN LIVERPOOL
A man named Jack Nelson, aged 26 and of Ullswater Avenue in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire, was convicted of raping a woman he met during a night out in Liverpool. His sickening sex attack occurred within hours of their meeting as they visited several bars together.
After returning to his student accommodation in Kensington, Nelson raped her, leading to a profound impact on her, including two incidents of attempted suicide.
Prosecutors emphasized that Nelson has no prior convictions.
During the trial at Liverpool Crown Court, it was heard that Nelson's actions caused significant emotional trauma.
His defense highlighted a diagnosis of autism and the delay of two years in charging, which they argued adversely affected him.
Nevertheless, a jury found Nelson guilty of one count of rape.
He was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Judge Denis Watson KC noted the delay in justice but stressed that the impact on the victim was far more important, mentioning her multiple suicide attempts.
Nelson appeared in court wearing a beige long-sleeved shirt, with short mousy brown hair and a beard.
As he learned his fate, tears were seen from a woman in the public gallery.
In addition to his prison term, Nelson was handed an indefinite restraining order and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
Merseyside Police Detective Constable Alex Fowler praised the victim's courage and affirmed that violence against women would not be tolerated.
Fowler stated, "Nelson has continually denied what he did and has put his victim through the trauma of having to relive the experience by way of a trial.
While no sentence will repair the damage Nelson inflicted on his victim, I hope this conviction has secured some justice for her."
