JACK MURRAY
The ordeal began in early 2023 when the victim was just 15 years old.
The offender, then aged 18, gradually took control of her life, cutting her off from support networks and attempting to make her dependent on him alone.
As the relationship continued, the teenager became pregnant at 16 and moved in with him.
Behind closed doors, however, she says her life was being turned upside down.
According to the victim, the offender repeatedly tried to distance her from family and friends and even attempted to prevent her from visiting her seriously unwell grandfather during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
After enduring the abuse for more than a year and a half, the brave teenager finally reported everything to police on 3 September 2024.
Just three days later, officers arrested the accused at his home address in St Andrews.
He was remanded in custody and remained behind bars while the case made its way through the courts.
Following a trial at Edinburgh High Court, the jury found him guilty of the offences.
In May 2026, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The court also imposed a further three-year extended supervision period, meaning he can be returned to prison if he breaches conditions after release.
In addition, a 50-year Non-Harassment Order was granted, banning him from contacting or approaching the victim either directly or indirectly.
While the court case may be over, the impact remains devastating.
The victim says she now suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and rarely leaves her home unless accompanied by a family member.
She also battles depression, which she describes as worse than ever before.
She has additionally developed seizures and is currently undergoing further medical investigations to determine their cause.
While it has not been established whether they are linked to the trauma she experienced, the condition has added another layer of uncertainty to her daily life.
Speaking about the lasting effects of the abuse, the victim said her life has been “completely changed” by what happened.
Although the sentence brings a measure of justice, the emotional scars left behind are expected to remain for many years to come.
