A man has been jailed and banned from contacting his former partner for 16 years after subjecting her to coercive control.

Imjaz Khan, 49, carried out what was described as “atrocious” abuse during their relationship.

Even after the victim reported him to the police, Khan continued trying to influence her from prison, pressuring her to withdraw her statements and file complaints against Bedfordshire Police.

Thanks to dedicated support from officers in the Emerald Team, the woman was able to give evidence in court.

In May, Khan was convicted of controlling and coercive behaviour as well as perverting the course of justice.

On Monday, 14 July, at Huntingdon Crown Court, Khan, of Oldfield Road in Bedford, was sentenced to four years and two months in prison and handed a 16-year restraining order.

Judge Dhaliwal-Thomas told Khan he had shown “little or no recognition” of the impact of his actions, saying his behaviour was “atrocious” and part of a continued pattern of abuse towards women.

PC Kelly Holliday, who led the investigation, said the abuse was appalling and that no one should have to suffer what the victim went through.

She praised the woman’s courage, particularly as Khan continued trying to manipulate her even while in custody.

She added that she hopes the sentence brings the victim some peace and closure.
