DRUNKEN FERRYHILL MAN TOOK TO WHEEL OF ESTRANGED PARTNER'S CAR

2025: A stalker who started a fire in his ex-partner’s bedroom after barricading himself in her home during a 90-minute stand-off with police has been locked up.

Idris Hussain told officers he was armed with a loaded shotgun and a knife when they arrived at his ex’s Coxhoe home after the defendant forced his way into the property.

The 33-year-old had jumped in a taxi at Bradford bus station to head to County Durham shortly after he had been released from prison.

Shaun Dryden, prosecuting, said when the defendant arrived at his ex-partner’s new home on December last year, he discovered to was empty persuaded the taxi driver to take him to a friend’s home instead Mr Dryden said on December 22, the defendant again turned up at the woman’s home to discover that he had arranged for a locksmith to come to the property to gain access before she was again forced to flee her home and call the police.

Hussain, of Sunbridge Road, Bradford, pleaded guilty to arson, stalking, making off without payment and two charges of causing criminal damage as a result of his behaviour in December last year.

2022/2023 A man carried out a drunken assault on his estranged partner as she was driving her car, before he took to the wheel himself after she fled the vehicle.

Durham Crown Court was told the incident took place only weeks after Idris Hussain received a suspended eight-week prison sentence for an offence of stalking the same woman.

Andrew Finlay, prosecuting, said the couple had been in a relationship for much of 2022, before things soured and he received the stalking conviction over numerous phone calls made to her, on October 28.

Despite being subject to a suspended prison sentence for stalking, Hussain turned up at her home in the company of another man, at 8.15pm on November 21.

Mr Finlay said Hussain was carrying two bottles of whisky and became involved in a row with his estranged partner over why she would not take him to Birmingham.

It culminated in them getting into her Range Rover and setting off, with Hussain continuing to be aggressive as she attempted to drive the vehicle.

At one stage, she dropped her phone having activated the 'SOS' button, which Hussain picked up from the footwell and told a call handler responding to the SOS alert that there was nothing wrong and claimed the crying of his estranged partner, who could be heard in the background, was actually a child.

As the woman tried to exit the car, Hussain pulled her back and struck her on the face, causing a swelling to her lip.

She was eventually able to escape, fleeing to a nearby shop to call the police.

Hussain struck and smashed the back window of the car with his fist in frustration, then drove away in the vehicle.

Police found the Range Rover abandoned in the middle of a road, with the rear side window smashed, blood stains on a back door, and the interior smelling of alcohol.

Although Hussain was not at his home address when police searched for him, he was found and arrested nearby.

The victim made an impact statement but subsequently retracted it, leading the prosecution to make no application for a restraining order.

Hussain, 30, of Rowlandson Terrace, Ferryhill, admitted to common assault, taking a vehicle without consent, driving without insurance, and criminal damage at a plea hearing last week.

His record includes offences of violence and a conviction for drug supply in 2016, for which he received a four-year prison sentence.

The court was told that recent offending, including the stalking conviction, was linked to mental health issues for which he was prescribed medication.

The sentencing concluded with a total 23-week prison sentence, combining 15 weeks jail and activation of the suspended sentence.

Hussain will also be banned from driving for six months upon release.
