NEWHAM MAN SEES SENTENCE FOR REPEATED RAPES INCREASED AFTER APPEAL
A man convicted of repeatedly assaulting and raping a woman has had his prison term lengthened.
Ian Vacciana, a resident of Newham, was convicted earlier this year of attacking the woman multiple times between summer 2018 and spring 2019.
The initial assault occurred in 2018, and during subsequent months, the victim sustained injuries severe enough to require hospitalization due to Vacciana’s violent behavior.
He committed numerous rapes, and the situation came to public attention when the woman managed to contact police following one particularly brutal assault.
In March, Vacciana received a sentence of 13 years and 6 months in prison from Snaresbrook Crown Court, along with an extended licence period of four years.
His convictions included grievous bodily harm with intent, rape, attempted rape, and assault by beating.
The Solicitor General, Rt Hon Michael Ellis QC MP, challenged this sentence by referring it to the Court of Appeal.
On Thursday, December 10, the court ruled that the sentence was unduly lenient, leading to its increase to 18 years’ imprisonment with an extended licence period of four years.
