IAN GREEN OF WEMBLEY SENTENCED FOR DECADE-LONG ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community, Ian Green, an 84-year-old resident of The Fairway in Wembley, was sentenced to prison for a prolonged campaign of sexual abuse against a young girl spanning over ten years. The abuse, which began when the victim was only five years old, was meticulously orchestrated by Green, who exploited his position of trust and the vulnerability of his young victim.

According to the details presented in Harrow Crown Court, Green initiated the grooming process in 1990. Over the course of the next decade, he engaged in repeated acts of sexual misconduct, with the abuse occurring on a weekly basis at times. The victim, now in her late twenties, endured this trauma for many years, which has left lasting scars on her mental health and well-being.

Judge Graham Arran, presiding over the case, addressed Green directly during the sentencing hearing last Friday. He stated, “The abuse started when your victim was perhaps five or six and went on until 16 or thereabouts. It happened on a frequent basis, perhaps once a week. It appears to have affected her school life and continues to have an impact on her life. She has suffered depression and from an early age she began to self-harm. She has, on a couple of occasions, tried to take her own life.”

Prosecutor Martin Lewis provided further context, revealing that Green’s offending began after he had retired in his early 60s. Over the years, Green’s grooming tactics led his victim to normalize his inappropriate behavior, which compounded the trauma she experienced. Lewis emphasized the profound effect this abuse had on her, stating, “The impact that this period has had on her cannot be underestimated. This behaviour over the years has made her feel worthless and she continues to feel worthless.”

It was only in August 2012, following a recent suicide attempt by the victim, that she found the courage to write a letter to her parents, exposing the systematic abuse she had endured. Her parents, upon learning the truth, confronted Green directly and insisted that he surrender himself to the authorities, leading to his eventual arrest.

Green’s defense lawyer, Oliver Renton, acknowledged the gravity of his client’s actions, saying, “He appreciates he has caused damage that simply cannot be underdone. He is sorry. He wishes this hearing to give the victim some degree of vindication. He went to the police station of his own volition. It was a brave act, albeit after a period of profound wrongdoing.”

On February 15, Green pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault. The first count involved multiple incidents between July 6, 1990, and November 2, 1994, targeting a girl under 13. The second count covered similar offences committed between November 3, 1994, and July 5, 2001, against a female under 16.

Judge Graham Arran sentenced Green to two years in prison for the first offence and three years for the second, with both sentences to run concurrently. Additionally, Green was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct in the future.
