IAN EVANS PONTYPRIDD VOYEUR CAUGHT FILMING MEN AND BOYS AT SERVICE STATIONS

In May 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Ian Evans, a 37-year-old resident of Rickards Street in Graig, Pontypridd, who engaged in heinous acts of voyeurism at local service stations. Evans was found to have concealed a small camera inside a carrier bag, which he then stealthily slid under toilet cubicle doors to secretly film men and boys using the facilities. This invasive behavior was part of a broader pattern of criminal activity that included the possession and distribution of a significant number of indecent images of children.

Police investigations revealed that Evans’s illicit activities extended beyond voyeurism. When officers executed a search warrant at his home on January 9, they confiscated various electronic devices, including a laptop, a hard drive, a mobile phone, a camera, and a memory card. During questioning, Evans admitted to the authorities, “There are things I have looked at that I should not have,” acknowledging his involvement in viewing and possessing illegal material.

The prosecution, led by Joanna James, presented evidence indicating the severity of Evans’s crimes. The police uncovered a disturbing collection of 43 videos classified as Category A, which depicted the rape and torture of children as young as five years old. Among these were videos involving the sexual abuse of an 18-month-old baby boy, a particularly grave offense. Additionally, the authorities found 34 Category B films showing eight-year-old children engaging in sexual acts with toddlers present. The evidence also included homemade recordings of boys under 13 years old and adult men in toilet cubicles, suggesting a pattern of voyeuristic behavior.

Some of the illicit images and videos remained on Evans’s devices, while others had been deleted, indicating an attempt to conceal his activities. The court was informed that the material included both still images and videos, some of which involved the most serious forms of child abuse. The prosecution emphasized that all the children depicted in these images were real victims, underscoring the gravity of the crimes.

In sentencing, Judge Crowther highlighted the seriousness of the offenses, reminding Evans that the children in the videos were actual victims. Evans pleaded guilty to charges of voyeurism, taking indecent images of children, and possessing indecent images of children. He was subsequently sentenced to 18 months in prison. Furthermore, he was placed under a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which requires him to comply with strict notification requirements during that period. The court also ordered the electronic devices used in the commission of these crimes to be forfeited and destroyed, aiming to prevent further misuse and distribution of such material.
