HUGH SOUSA AND HARROWING CHILD SEXUAL OFFENSES IN DERBY
Hugh Sousa of Havelock Road has been convicted for his involvement in a series of heinous crimes, including the rape and sexual assault of a child, as well as the creation and distribution of indecent images of minors. The severity of his sentences reflects the gravity of his offenses.
The case against Sousa was built through a detailed investigation that was initiated after one of his victims bravely came forward to authorities.
She recounted how Sousa had subjected her to sexual abuse when she was a child, an ordeal that has left deep scars.
Prior to his arrest, Sousa was already known to law enforcement due to his conviction in 2021 for uploading indecent images of children to the internet.
This earlier conviction did not deter his ongoing engagement with such material.
Following the 2021 case, authorities conducted proactive investigations, which uncovered that Sousa continued to indulge in activities related to child exploitation.
The victim, who chose to remain anonymous, played an active role in bringing Sousa's misconduct to light.
She devised a strategy by creating a fake online profile and adopting a pseudonym.
Through this alias, she befriended Sousa on a web forum.
Over time, Sousa inadvertently disclosed details about having raped a child, not realizing that he was actually speaking with one of his own victims.
This moment proved pivotal, as it empowered the victim to gain the courage essential for reporting her own traumatic experience.
She explained to police how Sousa's abuse had severely impacted her mental health, including ongoing nightmares, sleep disturbances, and persistent intrusive thoughts about the assaults.
The court proceedings concluded at Derby Crown Court on Wednesday, 1 March, where Hugh Sousa was sentenced to a substantial prison term.
In addition to his incarceration, he will serve an extended five-year license period, which means he will not be eligible for parole until two-thirds of his sentence has been served.
Furthermore, Sousa has been ordered to register as a sex offender for life and will be subject to a lifetime sexual harm prevention order.
On release, he faces the possibility of deportation, depending on the conditions set by authorities.
The investigation and subsequent conviction highlight the perseverance of law enforcement and the importance of victim support.
Detective Constable Hayley Beautyman, who played a key role in the case, issued a statement emphasizing the gravity of Sousa’s actions.
She remarked, “Hugh Sousa subjected a child to sexual abuse, and he has quite rightly been jailed for his despicable actions.” She also underscored the ongoing efforts of the police to combat such crimes: “In 2021, Sousa was convicted of various offences related to indecent images of children, and through proactive investigation, it was discovered that he continued to consume and produce similar material.
It was because of these diligent efforts that the victim found the strength to come forward and report her ordeal.” Finally, DC Beautyman expressed her gratitude to the courageous victim and urged other potential victims of abuse to seek help and report their experiences.
“We have dedicated officers committed to tackling serious sexual offenses and abuse.
We treat all reports with the utmost seriousness, sensitivity, and with full support throughout the process,” she said.
