HELEN SHAW FROM BLACKPOOL SENTENCED AFTER CRUELTY TO ELDERLY GERMAN SHEPHERD
Helen Tracy Shaw, a resident of Blackpool, has been found guilty of neglecting her elderly dog, Storm, leading to the animal's suffering and eventual euthanasia.Born on April 17, 1971, Shaw’s address was recorded as 21 Romney Avenue, Blackpool FY4 3AH.
Her case drew significant attention from animal welfare authorities after disturbing conditions were uncovered in her home.
Storm, a 13-year-old German Shepherd, was kept in deplorable conditions in an outbuilding on Shaw’s property.
The RSPCA inspectors who investigated the case described the environment as extremely unsanitary and unsuitable for any living creature.
The dog was suffering from multiple health issues, including untreated infections that had caused hearing loss, arthritis, and deteriorating eyesight.
His fur was extensively matted and patchy, with large areas of inflamed, scabby, and flaky skin exposed.
The remaining fur was dark brown, tangled into solid clumps, indicating neglect over a prolonged period.
One of the most alarming signs of Storm’s suffering was the condition of his ears.
His left ear appeared damaged, with a black substance oozing from it, and both ears were infected.
The dog was seen scratching his head incessantly, clearly in discomfort and distress.
The severity of his condition prompted veterinarians to make the difficult decision to put him to sleep on humane grounds, as his suffering was deemed intolerable.
Following the investigation, Helen Shaw, aged 48 at the time, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act.
The case was led by RSPCA Inspector William Lamping, who visited Shaw’s residence on February 18, 2020, to assess the situation.
Inspector Lamping described the conditions inside the outbuilding as appalling, with a hard, soiled floor covered in faeces and remnants of old dog food.
The bedding was in such a poor state that it was impossible to distinguish whether it was a towel or some other material; it appeared soaked and rotten.
The interior of the building had very little natural light, and when the door was closed, it was likely pitch dark.
Inspector Lamping emphasized that there is no justification for neglecting a pet to such an extent.
He urged pet owners to seek help if they are struggling to care for their animals, highlighting that assistance is always available to prevent suffering.
Shaw was sentenced to an 18-month community order, which included a 40-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and a six-week curfew.
Additionally, she was ordered to pay £330 in costs and charges.
Her ban from keeping dogs was set for five years, expiring in February 2026, as a consequence of her actions.
This case underscores the importance of animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners to ensure their animals are cared for in humane and healthy conditions.
The tragic end of Storm serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglect and the vital role of authorities in protecting vulnerable animals.
