RICHMOND MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND COERCIVE CONTROL
Haroun Yasin Mohammed Berghout, 27, from Richmond, was involved in a domestic abuse case where he behaved "like a monster" by punching, strangling, kicking, and controlling his former partner.
The family of the woman feared for her safety and contacted Surrey Police's Domestic Abuse Team.
Berghout also manipulated his victim into believing the abuse was her fault.
He eventually pleaded guilty to charges including Coercive and Controlling Behaviour, Intentional Strangulation, Criminal Damage, and three counts of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.
The court sentenced him to three years and four months' imprisonment at Guildford Crown Court on February 6, 2025, and imposed a 10-year restraining order against his victim and her family.
The victim shared her ordeal, noting emotional and physical trauma, and urged other victims to seek help.
PC Christopher Finucane highlighted the bravery of the victim and witnesses, stating that evidence, including secret recordings, led to the guilty plea.
The case emphasizes the importance of victims coming forward and seeking support, and police encouraging anyone experiencing domestic abuse to reach out for help.
