DAVID MACEY FROM RICHMOND ESCAPES JAIL AFTER ONLINE SEXUAL CHAT SCANDAL

In August 2022, a man from Richmond named David Macey, aged 62, was involved in a disturbing online case that drew significant attention from law enforcement authorities.

Macey was found to have engaged in explicit and inappropriate communications with individuals he believed to be underage boys, but who were actually undercover police officers posing as minors.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts of police to combat online child exploitation and the dangers of digital interactions that can often be misleading and harmful.

According to the prosecution, Helen Spector, Macey had sent explicit images of his private parts to what he thought were young boys, along with videos or images of himself performing lewd acts.

Additionally, he transmitted photographs depicting another man engaging in sexual acts with him.

These exchanges took place over a period from July 2018 through the summer of 2020, during which Macey believed he was communicating with minors aged between 13 and 15.

The court heard that he also sent images or videos of a sexual nature involving himself and another man, further emphasizing the depraved nature of his online activity.

David Macey appeared in York Crown Court on Tuesday, August 30, to be sentenced after pleading guilty to five counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child under 16 and causing a child to view sexual images.

He also faced an allegation related to the making or downloading of four Category B indecent images of children, but this charge was ultimately withdrawn after the prosecution accepted his plea.

The case was initiated after police received intelligence indicating that a man in Richmond was involved in online sexual chats with a person he believed to be a 13-year-old boy.

Undercover officers had set up a decoy account, using the username ‘David’ or ‘DM,’ to lure potential offenders.

Macey was arrested in July 2020 when authorities seized his Nokia phone and an Alcatel computer.

Subsequent analysis of these devices revealed that Macey had been engaging in explicit conversations with individuals he believed to be minors, with messages indicating that he thought they were between 13 and 15 years old.

These exchanges included numerous graphic images and videos sent via WhatsApp and Grindr, a popular gay dating app.

During police questioning, Macey initially claimed that he would cease communication if he suspected the contact was under 16.

He insisted that his actions were a mistake and denied any sexual interest in children.

However, in a later interview in February of the following year, he admitted to the online activity but maintained that he did not have a sexual interest in minors.

Notably, Macey chose not to have legal representation during his court appearance.

Judge Simon Hickey addressed Macey’s claims, dismissing his assertion that he would stop conversations with underage contacts.

The judge stated, “You clearly have an interest in under-age males,” but also noted that the children involved were fictitious, meaning no real victims were harmed.

The judge described Macey as a man of previously good character, describing him as a “rather sad and isolated” individual.

Recognizing the potential impact of a custodial sentence, the judge emphasized that an immediate jail term would cause significant harm to those close to Macey and that there was a realistic chance for rehabilitation.

As a result, Macey was sentenced to a 10-month jail term, suspended for the same period, coupled with a 40-day rehabilitation program.

He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years and was subject to a sexual-harm prevention order, which will restrict his internet activities for the same duration.

These measures aim to prevent further online misconduct and protect the community from potential harm stemming from his actions.
