OFFENDER WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT GUILTY OF ASSAULT ON TRAIN
A woman with a hearing impairment playing cards with her boyfriend on a train was attacked by Hannah Kasim, 33, of Blackburn Road, Accrington, Lancashire.Kasim swung at her to hit her, knocking her glasses from her face.
The incident occurred on August 10, 2020, as the victims were traveling from York to London’s Kings Cross and had reached Retford.
The court heard that Kasim, who was slumped over a bench with slurred speech, swung her arm at the woman and left the train at Newark Railway Station.
She did not remember the incident or her arrest.
District Judge Timothy Spruce found her guilty of assault by beating and being drunk and disorderly in her absence, issuing a warrant for her arrest.
Her case was scheduled for a trial on June 18, but she did not attend.
The judge was satisfied she was fully aware of the proceedings and the consequences of not attending, and he concluded the evidence proved her guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
