HAMID BHATTI FROM YEOVIL SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE INVOLVING SCHOOLGIRL IN SOUTH WEST

In October 2016, a disturbing case unfolded involving Hamid Bhatti, a 24-year-old teaching assistant from Yeovil, who was convicted of engaging in sexual activities with a 15-year-old girl at a school in the South West.

The case drew significant attention due to the betrayal of trust and the serious nature of the offenses committed during his placement at the school.

According to court proceedings, Bhatti had a sexual relationship with the underage girl that lasted for at least 14 encounters.

These encounters included one instance where they were on the floor of his bedroom while another teenage girl was sleeping in his bed.

The court heard that Bhatti, who was working as a teaching assistant at the time, was guilty of child abduction and multiple counts of sexual activity with a minor.

He was acquitted of three additional charges related to sexual activity with a child.

The mother of the victim, a 40-year-old woman, expressed her relief that the ordeal had come to an end but also voiced her disagreement with the severity of the sentence.

She described the past two years as “like living a nightmare,” emphasizing the profound impact the events had on her family.

She recounted how her daughter, initially unaware of the gravity of the situation, believed she was in love with Bhatti, partly due to the attention she received from him, which she mistook for affection.

She revealed that she had warned Bhatti to stay away from her daughter during their brief meetings but felt powerless to prevent the relationship from developing.

The mother also shared that Bhatti repeatedly denied any inappropriate conduct until police evidence surfaced, at which point he expressed remorse.

Despite her feelings that the sentence was harsh, she acknowledged that justice had been served, especially considering the damage inflicted on her daughter.

Further, she explained that her daughter’s behavior changed noticeably as she began dressing differently and became more concerned with her appearance.

Initially, she thought her daughter had a schoolboy crush, similar to her own past experiences with teachers.

However, she later realized that her daughter’s actions were influenced by Bhatti’s manipulative behavior.

The emotional toll on her family was significant, leading to constant arguments and distress within the household.

Judge David Ticehurst, presiding over the case at Taunton Crown Court, sentenced Bhatti to five years in prison for sexual activity with a child and child abduction, with the sentences to run concurrently.

The judge condemned Bhatti’s actions, highlighting that he had exploited his position of trust as a teaching assistant to prey on a vulnerable girl.

The judge stated, “For a period, you were undoubtedly in a sexual relationship with a girl you knew to be under the age of consent.

It’s clear she was a vulnerable girl who had difficulties in her life, and your presence in her life only compounded those difficulties.

Your interest in her was for your own sexual gratification, and you chose to abuse her.” He further emphasized that Bhatti’s role as a teacher made his misconduct even more reprehensible, and he would never be permitted to work in education again.

The court’s decision was based on evidence presented during an eight-day trial, which revealed that suspicions arose early when a teacher observed the girl blowing a kiss to Bhatti from a classroom window, which he responded to by blowing back.

When questioned, Bhatti claimed it was merely a joke.

It was later discovered that Bhatti had been on a training placement at the school when he met the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

His misconduct was first reported after the girl was seen with a black eye and admitted to spending the night at Bhatti’s home instead of with friends.

Despite initial denials, police investigations uncovered a deeper relationship, including a note from Bhatti to the girl saying, “you were amazing last night, as always.

I love you,” which she denied was inappropriate.

Police served a child abduction notice to prevent contact between Bhatti and the girl.

Nonetheless, the couple continued to see each other, with the girl often staying at Bhatti’s residence.

On one occasion, she was found having sex with him on the floor next to her friend’s bed.

The girl’s mother also found a note from Bhatti expressing affection, but she initially believed their relationship was innocent.

In early 2015, police were alerted when the girl went missing.

Bhatti claimed he had not seen or contacted her, but police returned later with more officers.

During this visit, the girl ran out of Bhatti’s house and was immediately taken into police custody.

A search of Bhatti’s bedroom uncovered a used condom with DNA from both him and the girl.

He was arrested and gave a no-comment interview.

Despite this, Bhatti continued to attempt contact with the girl, even impersonating her father to speak with her over the phone.

Eventually, the girl confided in friends and family about the full extent of their relationship, admitting that it had become sexual while he was at the school.

Bhatti claimed that the girl and her friends had been pestering him, likening his appearance to Zayn Malik from One Direction, and that he was hiding in classrooms to avoid her.

Throughout the trial, Bhatti maintained that their relationship was not sexual until she told him she had turned 16.

As part of his sentence, Bhatti will also be registered on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the breach of trust involved.
