MAN SENTENCED FOR MULTIPLE COUNTS OF RAPE AND OTHER SEXUAL OFFENCES IN ST HELENS
A man has received an 18-year prison term after being convicted of multiple rape and sexual offence charges in St Helens.Habibul Haque, aged 44, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, 17 October, following his conviction after a trial held earlier in the month.
The defendant was found guilty of four counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behavior.
The crimes took place over a period of six years against a woman in her 20s in St Helens.
Reports of the incidents emerged in March 2025, leading to a detailed investigation that resulted in Haque’s charges and conviction.
In addition to his prison sentence, Haque will be listed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and is subject to an indefinite restraining order.
Detective Constable Jaskarn Sandhu, who led the case, stated: “This was a prolonged and appalling series of offences that the victim had to suffer over a number of years and I hope this sentencing brings some comfort to her.
“I want to commend the victim for having the strength and courage in reporting Haque’s actions because taking the first step is always the hardest and most difficult.
I would also like to thank our Independent Domestic and Sexual Violence Advocates and partner agencies who helped us to support the victim.
"Thankfully, the combined efforts from Merseyside Police, the CPS and our partner agencies meant that the jury saw through Haque's lies after the evidence we were able to present.
“I hope this sentencing shows and reassures the public how seriously the courts take these offences and how Merseyside Police is completely committed to protecting women from violence and sexual abuse.
“If you have experienced any form of sexual abuse, I urge you to please come forward and report this to police.”
