HABIB KHAN JAILED FOR RAPE AND STRANGULATION IN DERBY
In a harrowing case that has sent shockwaves through the Derby community, Habib Khan was convicted of a brutal assault that left a woman in terror and fearing for her life.The incident occurred in the early hours of November 10, 2022, when Khan lured the woman into a residential block of flats in Derby.
Once inside, he led her into the stairwell, where the assault unfolded in a terrifying sequence of events that would forever change her life.
According to court reports, Khan physically restrained the woman, raping her in a violent and aggressive manner.
During the attack, he also throttled her, causing her to fear that he was going to kill her.
The assault was not only physically traumatic but also psychologically devastating for the victim, who described the experience as one of the most distressing moments of her life.
Following the assault, Khan stole her belongings, including her bag, which contained her bank card, house keys, and approximately fifteen pounds in cash.
After committing the theft, he fled the scene, leaving the woman shaken and terrified.
Her immediate response was to report the incident to the police, which proved crucial in the investigation.
Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, collecting forensic evidence from the scene and taking DNA samples from the woman.
These samples matched Khan’s DNA, providing vital evidence that linked him directly to the crime.
Subsequently, Khan was charged with multiple offenses, including rape, assault by penetration, intentional strangulation, and theft.
During the trial at Derby Crown Court, the victim delivered a heartfelt victim impact statement, describing the profound and ongoing effects of the assault on her life.
She expressed her disbelief that her attacker would be caught and shared her daily struggles with fear and anxiety, especially when walking in public or visiting shops.
She also recounted the emotional toll of the court proceedings, emphasizing her gratitude towards the police and the officer who supported her throughout the process.
Her words reflected a mixture of relief and trauma, particularly when she learned that the jury found Khan guilty.
She stated, “What happened to me is difficult to put into words.
I thought no one would believe this had happened to me and I never thought the person who did this would be found.
Since that night I have struggled every day.
I get scared when someone is walking behind me in the street.
Even going to the shops I will be looking behind me to see if someone’s there.
I found going to court really hard and stressful.
I am very thankful to the courts, the police and the officer supporting me through this.
Without him I would never have gone through with this.
The best experience of my life was when the police officer asked me to sit down and told me the jury believed me and he had been found guilty.
No one deserves what he put me through and he should be stopped from ever doing this again.” Habib Khan, aged 22 and residing on Moyne Gardens in Derby, denied all charges, claiming that the sexual activity was consensual.
However, the jury was convinced of his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and returned a unanimous verdict of guilty on December 8, after a trial at Derby Crown Court.
On January 25, Khan appeared once more before the same court, where he was sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison.
An additional six-year extension was imposed due to the dangerousness of his actions.
Furthermore, he was ordered to register as a sex offender and was issued a restraining order that prohibits any contact with the victim.
