WALSALL MAN JAILED FOR GRANDMOTHER'S SAVAGE STABBING
Gregory Irvin, aged 26, was found guilty of the murder of his 74-year-old grandmother, Anne James, after stabbing her more than 30 times during a violent assault at her residence in Walsall, West Midlands, on 28 February.The court was told that he attacked his grandmother first in the back and then in the chest following an assault in her kitchen.
Irvin was saddled with a £35,000 gambling debt and was described as a 'compulsive liar' by the court.
During his sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court, he was sentenced to a minimum of 24 years in prison for his violent actions.
The judge described the murder as an act of 'extraordinary ferocity and cruelty.' Evidence including CCTV footage and DNA analysis established his connection to the crime scene.
Irvin claimed he had no memory of the attack, but the judge dismissed this as a false claim.
Family members described him as 'evil' and expressed their horror and terror regarding the incident.
It was also revealed that Irvin had manipulated his family for financial gain and was a user of cocaine.
The lengthy sentence aims to prevent him from causing further harm and emphasizes the gravity of his offense.
