AUDENSHAW PAEDOPHILE GRAHAM AVISON SENTENCED FOR YEARS OF ABUSE IN GREATER MANCHESTER AND WALES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Audenshaw and the wider Greater Manchester area, Graham Avison, a 75-year-old man, has been convicted of a prolonged campaign of sexual abuse against a teenage boy. The abuse spanned over four years, during which Avison, who was a former Scout leader, exploited his position of trust to groom and assault the young victim.Authorities from Greater Manchester Police described Avison as a 'dangerous paedophile,' emphasizing the severity of his actions and the threat he posed to children. The investigation revealed that Avison initially established a relationship with the boy through his involvement in the Scouts, where he was serving as a leader at the time. The victim, who was only 14 when the abuse began, was subjected to a series of grooming tactics that started with seemingly innocent gestures such as giving small gifts, including chocolate bars. Over time, these gestures escalated to more significant offerings, culminating in Avison providing the boy with a car.
The abuse was not confined to one location. Police reports detailed that Avison indecently assaulted the boy on his private boat, a Catamaran moored in Wales, during sailing trips. These trips often involved other individuals and were used as opportunities for further abuse. The boat trips extended to overnight stays, either on the vessel itself or in various hotels, where the assaults continued. Additionally, the abuse took place at Avison’s residence in Audenshaw, Tameside, as well as during trips to boat shows across the country.
Investigators highlighted that the boat trips and overnight stays provided a setting for the abuse to occur, with the victim often staying over in the company of Avison or other individuals. The police praised the bravery of the victim, who came forward to report the abuse, which was instrumental in bringing Avison to justice.
Graham Avison, who resides on Astbury Avenue in Audenshaw, pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent assault against a child. His plea led to a sentencing hearing at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, where he was handed a prison sentence of five years and seven months. In addition to his incarceration, Avison was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was ordered to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The case has garnered significant attention, highlighting the importance of vigilance and the courage of victims in confronting abuse. The community of Audenshaw and the surrounding areas are urged to remain alert and supportive of victims of such heinous crimes, as authorities continue to work tirelessly to protect children and hold offenders accountable.
