GORDON ELLIS FROM CALDEWGATE, CARLISLE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE BOYS
In a case that has shocked the local community of Carlisle, particularly the Caldewgate area, Gordon Ellis, a 53-year-old former television cameraman, has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for the sexual abuse of two teenage boys he met through his church connections.Ellis appeared before Carlisle’s crown court to face charges that included three counts of indecent assault involving the two victims. The offences, which took place during the 1990s, spanned over many months and were described as serious examples of his misconduct. The victims, both in their mid-teens at the time, had their lives affected profoundly by his actions.
Prosecutor Katie Jones outlined to the court that the allegations only came to light after the first victim, who had kept the abuse secret for more than a decade, was inspired by a church sermon to finally disclose what had happened. This revelation prompted an investigation, leading to Ellis’s arrest and subsequent charges of sexual assault.
Further details emerged when the second victim’s mother read about Ellis’s charges in the local newspaper, the News & Star. Concerned, she questioned her son, leading him to reveal that he had also been abused by Ellis in a similar manner. The court heard that Ellis had initially befriended the boys through church activities, showering one of them with gifts and favors. However, his relationship with the first boy was marred by prolonged abuse, during which he engaged in sexual acts and subjected him to inappropriate touching over a period of more than two years.
While the assaults on the second boy were described as less severe, they still involved inappropriate physical contact. Ellis’s defense lawyer, Cecilia Pritchard, acknowledged the gravity of his actions, stating that he now accepts that his behavior was “appalling.” She explained that Ellis had admitted to his misconduct voluntarily, aiming to prevent the victims from enduring the trauma of giving evidence in court.
In sentencing, the judge ordered Ellis to serve two years and nine months behind bars. Additionally, he was mandated to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years and was prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with children. The case has left a lasting impact on the Carlisle community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safeguarding within local religious and social groups.
