GIEDRIUS URBONAVICIUS CONVICTED OF RAPE IN PETERHEAD

A man identified as Giedrius Urbonavicius has been found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault against a woman inside a residence in Peterhead. The conviction was handed down after a comprehensive week-long trial at the High Court in Aberdeen, where the jury deliberated and reached a verdict.

During the proceedings, it was disclosed that the female victim reported being raped approximately four times during a harrowing 90-minute ordeal. She recounted to police that Urbonavicius, a Lithuanian national, initially claimed that their sexual encounters were consensual. However, the situation escalated as he allegedly put his arm around her and carried her, before ultimately forcing himself upon her in a manner that caused her injury. The assault took place on September 15, 2022, and left the victim deeply traumatized.

Following the attack, the woman contacted a friend and confided, “I’ve just been raped.” She also revealed that during the incident, she had grabbed a knife and used it to threaten Urbonavicius, which compelled him to leave her home. Her account was supported by witness testimonies, including a man in his early 70s who stated that during the early hours, the woman reached out to him, expressing that she had been raped. She further told police that she did not recognize her attacker and that he was a foreigner, which aligned with Urbonavicius’s nationality.

Another witness, a taxi driver, provided evidence indicating that he had transported the accused and the victim from Drummer’s Corner to the residence in question. The driver described Urbonavicius as “quiet” during the journey, which was a notable detail in the case.

It was established during the trial that the assault occurred while both the woman and Urbonavicius were drinking at the property. The victim detailed that she was raped four times within the span of 90 minutes, during which Urbonavicius carried her from the bedroom to the living room and continued his assault. The court heard that the attack was brutal and sustained over a significant period.

Following the jury’s guilty verdict, Judge Graham Buchanan ordered Urbonavicius to be remanded into custody. The judge also deferred sentencing to allow for the preparation of background reports, with further court proceedings scheduled to determine the final penalty.
