ASHBY PENSIONER GEORGE GREATOREX SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN LEICESTER
In July 2017, a 76-year-old man from Ashby, identified as George Greatorex of North Street, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for sexually abusing four young girls.Greatorex denied any indecent conduct towards the victims, but after a trial at Leicester Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of eight charges, including various forms of indecency committed on multiple dates between 1996 and 2007.
The victims ranged in age from four to thirteen: two girls were between four and six, a third was seven to nine, and the fourth was thirteen.
During the sentencing, Judge Ebraham Mooncey highlighted the serious impact of Greatorex’s actions, stating that the offenses had "dire effects" on the victims.
The judge acknowledged that some victims had delayed reporting the abuse, emphasizing that "no-one should judge a child who goes through this experience and tries to deal with it the best way they can, locking it away in the dark recess of the mind whilst trying to maintain a normal life." Each victim coped with their trauma in their own unique way.
Greatorex appeared at his sentencing hearing via a live video link from prison.
The judge remarked on his health, noting, "You’re in poor health now and you have various ailments.
But I note that you’d already stopped work, through ill health, before you began any of this offending." He also highlighted that Greatorex had no previous convictions and had not offended in over a decade.
The judge warned that the sentence could mean Greatorex’s remaining years are spent behind bars, and there is a real possibility he will spend the rest of his life in prison.
He clarified that the individual sentences are less than they would be if imposed separately, due to their totality.
Greatorex was convicted of one indecent assault, four counts of sexually assaulting girls under 13, three counts of sexual activity with a child, and one of causing a child to watch a sexual act by showing her pornographic images on playing cards.
