EX-CAMBRIDGESHIRE POLICEMAN GETS SUSPENDED PRISON FOR CONTROLLING BEHAVIOUR
A former police officer named George Georgiou, aged 44 and from Ware in Hertfordshire, has received a suspended sentence for controlling and coercive behaviour.Georgiou served with Cambridgeshire Police and was convicted last month of gross misconduct for abusing his position to bully and intimidate a victim.
The court heard that he used his role to threaten violence, specifically telling the victim he would hit her and warning her that no one would believe her if she reported the abuse because he was a police officer.
Georgiou was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years, at St Albans Crown Court.
The police disciplinary panel concluded he would have been dismissed from the force had he not resigned on the day of his sentencing.
The Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire Police, Nick Dean, emphasised that abuse by police officers is unacceptable and highlighted greater scrutiny of misconduct related to violence against women and girls.
Georgiou was based at Thorpe Wood Police Station in Peterborough, and his resignation was noted by Cambridgeshire Police during the disciplinary process.
