AMANDA MCNALLY FROM WARE JAILED FOR SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH PUPIL AT EAST HERTFORDSHIRE SCHOOL

In December 2012, a disturbing case emerged involving Amanda McNally, a care worker from Ware, who was convicted of engaging in a sexual relationship with a pupil at a school in East Hertfordshire. The incident came to light after a principal at the school unexpectedly walked into a private room and discovered McNally in a compromising situation with a teenage boy.

According to court proceedings held at St Albans Crown Court, the principal entered a room at the school and saw a silhouette behind a bed. When the principal looked closer, he saw the boy, who was at the time unable to be named due to legal restrictions, emerging topless from behind the bed. McNally was found hiding behind the same bed, with her half-naked teenage charge. The court heard that the boy, who has the mental age of approximately 13, was in a room at the school when the principal made the discovery.

Later, McNally attempted to explain the situation by claiming they were searching for a paintbrush to decorate the boy’s flat. The following day, the teenager confessed to police that he had engaged in sexual activity with McNally on more than one occasion, and that their encounters had occurred multiple times. He described her as someone who was initially kind but ultimately took advantage of his vulnerability, stating, “She was being nice but she took advantage of me.”

Prosecutor Michael Speak highlighted that McNally, aged 41 at the time, was employed as a house care assistant at the school for three years. The role was described by the school’s principal as akin to that of a “surrogate parent,” with responsibilities including waking the children, preparing breakfast, assisting with personal hygiene, cleaning their homes, and doing shopping. After school hours, her duties extended to making tea and caring for the children.

The impact of the relationship on the teenage boy was profound. He expressed feelings of insecurity, suicidal thoughts, and difficulty sleeping. He told authorities, “She said she was my friend. I can’t trust her. Now I am in a black hole.”

McNally, who resides on Watton Road in Ware, did not comment during police interviews but later admitted to having engaged in sexual activity with a minor while in a position of trust. Her defense lawyer, Stephen Requena, revealed that before her arrest on February 22, she had sent the boy a text message indicating that their relationship should end. Requena also noted that McNally described the relationship as the only source of happiness in her life at that time, citing her separation from her husband in 2005 and subsequent divorce in January, after her husband expressed intentions to marry another woman.

It was not an isolated incident and only stopped when you were discovered. This was a highly inappropriate relationship. He was 17, you were 41. He was vulnerable and compliant. You took advantage to enter into this relationship. You knew it was wrong but you persisted.”
