GEORGE BURNIP'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN SCUNTHORPE: CHILD RAPE AND THREATS SHOCK COMMUNITY

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the town of Scunthorpe, Geoffrey Burnip, aged 46, was sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison after being convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving an eight-year-old girl. The crimes unfolded just weeks after Burnip was released from prison, highlighting a troubling pattern of repeated offenses and a failure of the justice system to prevent further harm.

Burnip, who has a long history of sexual offenses, initially befriended a local family in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, shortly after completing his previous sentence for harassment of an ex-partner. The family, feeling sympathy for him, offered him meals and allowed him to stay overnight at their home. Unbeknownst to them, Burnip was secretly plotting to exploit their trust for his own depraved purposes. To gain the confidence of the children, he bought them sweets, a tactic often used by predators to establish a false sense of friendship and security.

His sinister intentions culminated when he took the eight-year-old girl to his flat, where he subjected her to a brutal sexual assault. During this assault, Burnip threatened her with violence, warning that he would kill her family and dismember her if she dared to tell anyone about what had happened. The assault only came to light after Burnip confided in a former cellmate, who then reported his confession to the police. This revelation led to Burnip’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.

At Grimsby Crown Court, Burnip admitted to five serious offenses, including rape, attempted rape, false imprisonment, and sexual assault. The court heard that these crimes involved the same young girl and occurred between August 1 and September 13 of the previous year. The judge sentenced him to an indeterminate term, with a minimum of five years before he could be considered for release, reflecting the gravity of his actions and the threat he poses to society.

Prosecutor Jeremy Evans detailed how Burnip had initially befriended the girl after establishing a connection with her father. On one occasion, he took her to his home under the pretense of a shopping trip, where he committed the sexual offenses. Burnip’s threats of violence, including stabbing her and chopping off her arms and legs, were meant to terrify her into silence. He also warned her that harm would come to her family if she disclosed what had transpired.

The case was further complicated by Burnip’s extensive criminal history. He had previously served six months at Durham Crown Court in 1998 for indecent assault on a young girl, and in 2007, he received a four-year sentence at York Crown Court for falsely imprisoning a boy with the intent to commit a sexual offense. Additionally, he had been subject to a community rehabilitation order in 2002 for indecent assault and had spent 21 months in jail in 2010 for intimidating a witness by threatening an ex-partner.

During the sentencing hearing, Burnip’s defense lawyer, Richard Woolfall, expressed remorse on his client’s behalf. Woolfall stated that Burnip felt “utterly ashamed” and considered himself “scum,” acknowledging the severity of his crimes. He also noted that Burnip’s remorse was genuine and that he felt sympathy for the girl’s family, given his own history of “horrendous abuse.” Woolfall emphasized that Burnip had spared the young girl the trauma of testifying in court by pleading guilty.

Judge Kate Buckingham addressed the court, highlighting the traumatic impact of Burnip’s actions on the young victim. She described the girl’s transformation from a happy, playful child to one who was withdrawn, frightened, and traumatized. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, calling them “grave and heinous,” and underscored the significant risk Burnip posed to the public.

As part of his sentence, Burnip was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was indefinitely banned from working with children. He was also subjected to an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, aimed at protecting the community from further harm. At the time of sentencing, Burnip was in custody after being recalled to prison on license, underscoring ongoing concerns about his potential for reoffending.
