GEFF GOLDTHORPE FROM MARSKE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN TEESSIDE
In a case that has shocked the local community, Geoff Goldthorpe, a 49-year-old man from Marske, has been sentenced to five years in prison after confessing to serious sexual offenses committed against a teenage girl several years ago. The incident came to light after Goldthorpe voluntarily entered a police station to disclose his past actions, a decision that ultimately led to his conviction.Goldthorpe’s dramatic confession took place at the police station located in Kirkleatham, Teesside. According to reports, he approached the front desk and, overwhelmed with emotion, told officers, “I’ve got something to tell you.” His words revealed a long-standing internal struggle, as he admitted to having developed an infatuation with the girl six years prior and engaging in sexual contact with her during that period.
He further confided in the police that he had been contemplating suicide, expressing fears that his actions would lead to widespread condemnation by stating, “Everyone will hate me now.” The confession came just hours after he had been cautioned at the same police station regarding a domestic violence incident, which added a complex layer to the case.
Teesside Crown Court heard that Goldthorpe’s revelations prompted a thorough investigation. He later pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including indecency, two counts of indecent assault, and three counts of sexual activity with a child. His decision to come forward was described by the prosecution as a significant factor in the case, with his legal representative, Peter Wishlade, emphasizing his client’s remorse.
Mr. Wishlade stated that Goldthorpe was “utterly and totally ashamed” of his actions and expressed “abject remorse.” He urged the court to consider a lenient sentence, highlighting that Goldthorpe had initiated the investigation himself by confessing. “Essentially, he brought this prosecution upon himself,” Wishlade argued, noting that there was no guarantee the offenses would have been reported if he had not come forward.
Goldthorpe, who resides on Marlborough Avenue in Marske, was subsequently placed on the sex offenders’ register by Judge Peter Bowers. Additionally, restrictions were imposed to prevent him from having unsupervised contact with individuals under 16 and from residing in a household with children.
The judge addressed Goldthorpe directly, stating, “I don’t need to lecture you or tell you how wrong what you did is. Your admissions and your frankness will help you to some extent when you undergo the sex offenders’ treatment programme. They can work with someone who is prepared to accept they have done something wrong, while they have great difficulty working with someone who refuses to acknowledge what they have done.”
Detective Constable Ged Swash, of the Cleveland Police child abuse investigation unit, praised the victim’s courage in coming forward. He emphasized that the sentence reflected the gravity of the offenses and the profound impact they had on the victim, underscoring the seriousness with which the authorities treat such cases.
