GAVIN PLUMB SENTENCED FOR PLOT TO KIDNAP AND MURDER HOLLY WILLOUGHBY IN ESSEX
The community of Essex can breathe a sigh of relief today as the streets are now safer for women and girls following the conviction and sentencing of a dangerous sexual predator, Gavin Plumb.Plumb, aged 37, was handed a life sentence after a thorough investigation by Essex Police’s Major Crime Team, culminating in his appearance at Chelmsford Crown Court where he was found guilty of plotting to kidnap, rape, and murder television presenter Holly Willoughby.
During the trial, it was revealed that Plumb had been obsessively fixated on Holly Willoughby since 2021.
His obsession was not superficial; he had extensively scoured social media platforms and online sources, accumulating thousands of images of the star and gaining detailed knowledge of her daily activities and whereabouts.
This disturbing level of fixation underscored the seriousness of his intentions.
Gavin Plumb’s criminal history included previous convictions for kidnap and attempted kidnap of women, which painted a troubling picture of his violent tendencies.
His sinister plans involved abducting the presenter from her family home, with evidence showing he had joined various online forums, including one called “Abduct Lovers.” In these forums, beginning in 2021, he engaged in discussions about his intentions, openly talking about how he would restrain his victim and even purchasing equipment such as metal cable ties, ropes, and chloroform to facilitate his malicious plans.
Further evidence presented at court included conversations between Plumb and an individual known as “Marc,” where they discussed graphic details of sexual violence and murder.
These exchanges demonstrated the extent of his depraved mindset and the seriousness of his intentions.
Fortunately, Plumb’s plans were foiled thanks to the vigilance of an American undercover police officer.
In October 2023, while Plumb was actively discussing his attack online, he was unaware that the person he was seeking to involve in his plot was actually an undercover officer from the United States.
The officer, recognizing the imminent danger to Holly Willoughby, promptly contacted both the FBI and British authorities.
Following this coordinated effort, Essex Police detectives arrested Plumb at his residence in Potters Field, Harlow, on October 4, 2023.
His arrest prevented any harm from coming to the intended victim and highlighted the importance of international cooperation in tackling such threats.
In court, Judge Mr.
Justice Murray emphasized the gravity of Plumb’s actions and the danger he posed to women.
He praised Holly Willoughby’s “considerable courage” in facing the ordeal and stated that the evidence indicated Plumb’s intentions went far beyond mere fantasy.
The judge pointed out Plumb’s history of violent and sexually motivated crimes, his purchase of equipment to commit offences, and his detailed research into Willoughby’s personal life.
Addressing Plumb directly, the judge made it clear that his actions represented a significant risk to women.
As a result, he was sentenced to a discretionary life term, with a minimum of 16 years to be served before he could be considered for release.
The court also ordered that, should he ever be released, Plumb would be subject to lifelong licence conditions, ensuring ongoing supervision and restrictions to protect the public from any future threats.
