GAVIN BEDFORD CAUGHT IN BARNSEY BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS AFTER TRAVELING FROM FARTOWN
In March 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving Gavin Bedford, a resident of Fartown, who was caught in a sting operation orchestrated by paedophile hunters. Bedford had traveled from his home in Fartown to Barnsley station with the apparent intention of meeting a 14-year-old girl he believed he had been communicating with online. His plans were thwarted when the Parents Against Paedophiles group set up a fake social media profile, which was used to lure him into the trap. The profile falsely claimed that the girl was 18 years old, but after initial contact, Bedford was informed that she was only 14 and was asked whether he still wished to continue their conversation.
Prosecutor Michael Smith outlined the details of the case during a hearing at Bradford Crown Court. He explained that Bedford, aged 26 and residing on Whitestone Lane in Fartown, engaged in sexually explicit online chats with the fictitious girl. During these exchanges, Bedford expressed a willingness to meet her in person, discussing kissing and cuddling, and even talking about having sex.
Mr. Smith detailed that Bedford requested photographs of the girl in her underwear and encouraged her to perform a sexual act. He also revealed that Bedford disclosed he had recently separated from his wife and suggested that the girl could move in with him once she turned 16.
According to the evidence, Bedford and the girl arranged to meet in Barnsley on December 1 of the previous year. However, upon his arrival at the station, Bedford was detained by the authorities and subsequently arrested. During police interviews, Bedford claimed that he was unaware of her true age, believing her to be 19, and stated that the girl had not disclosed her age to him.
In January, Bedford pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming. It was also revealed that he had already spent nearly four months in custody on remand. The court heard that Bedford attempted to shift blame onto the girl, suggesting she had been the one pestering him for sex, but the chat logs indicated that he was the primary initiator and driving force behind the conversations.
As part of his sentencing, Bedford will be required to participate in a sexual offending rehabilitation program. Additionally, he has been sentenced to complete 150 hours of unpaid community work. He will also be registered as a sex offender for the next ten years and will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further offending.
