GARY PEARCE FROM SIDCUP SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING 14-YEAR-OLD BOY MET ON GRINDR

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Sidcup, a former educator has been handed a five-year prison sentence after being convicted of serious child sex offences involving a 14-year-old boy. The individual, identified as Gary Pearce, aged 40, residing on Ellenborough Road in Sidcup, was sentenced at the Inner London Crown Court on Friday, September 12. The conviction followed a thorough investigation and a guilty verdict delivered on August 11, which confirmed Pearce's involvement in grooming and engaging in sexual activities with a minor.

Details of the case reveal that the Metropolitan Police Service’s Sapphire Command, a specialized unit within the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, led the inquiry. The police were prompted to act after the victim’s parents discovered messages of a sexual nature on their son’s mobile phone. These messages indicated that the boy, then only 14 years old, had been in contact with Pearce through the popular social networking application Grindr during the summer of 2012.

Despite the victim explicitly informing Pearce of his age, the defendant continued to communicate with him and eventually arranged to meet in person. The meeting took place in a supermarket car park, where Pearce then took the young boy back to his residence. There, Pearce engaged in sexual acts with the minor, an act that has been classified as grooming and sexual activity with a child under the law. After the encounter, Pearce returned the boy to the same car park, and the two never met again.

Following the police investigation, Pearce was arrested at his home on December 11, 2012. During police interviews, Pearce claimed that the victim had told him he was of the age of consent, although he did not comment on other questions posed by investigators. The legal process culminated in Pearce being formally charged on July 24, 2013.

DC Chris Hammond, the officer assigned to the case from Sapphire Command, emphasized the gravity of the situation: “Despite being in a position of trust as a teacher, Gary Pearce met the 14-year-old victim through the internet, then arranged and proceeded to meet him in person.” Hammond also highlighted the police’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals, stating, “The Met is dedicated to protecting young and vulnerable people and encourage victims to come forward where they will be fully supported by specially trained officers.”

Detective Inspector Neal Burton, also from Sapphire Command, added: “Pearce utilized the internet to manipulate the child into meeting him. This crime again shows the vulnerability of the internet and social media, which is exploited by paedophiles to find their victims. This conviction demonstrates our relentless pursuit of those who commit these heinous crimes against children, providing reassurance to the community that justice is being served.”
