HELENSBURGH MAN CONVICTED OF 20 YEARS OF VIOLENT DOMESTIC ABUSE INCLUDING ATTACKING PREGNANT PARTNER
A MAN has been convicted of violently abusing his partner over the course of 20 years in Helensburgh - including carrying out attacks on her when she was pregnant.Gary Patterson faced a trial at Dumbarton Sheriff Court, charged with a decades-long pattern of conduct including strangling his partner until she was unconscious. The charges detailed repeated violent assaults that left her severely injured and endangered her life.
Patterson also attacked a 10-year-old girl in February 2014 by seizing her by the neck and pinning her against a wall injury.
Another charge covered his behavior from October 6, 2010, to June 30, 2018, where he repeatedly shouted, swore, behaved aggressively, threw household items at both his partner and children, and made abusive remarks, creating a fear and alarm atmosphere for his victims. The jury convicted Patterson, 43, of attacking his partner between July 1, 1998, and June 30, 2018, at a property in Helensburgh and elsewhere.
The violent acts included pushing her on the body, pinning her against walls, hitting her on the head and body, throwing household objects, and repeatedly seizing her by the hair.
He also strangled her by compressing her neck until she was unconscious and attempted to push her down stairs.
These acts were considered particularly serious because the victims were his partner and a child.
The jury's verdict was reached by a majority after a five-day trial.
The Sheriff, Maxwell Hendry, called for background reports prior to sentencing scheduled for May 11.
Patterson, who was residing in Paisley at the time, was permitted to remain on bail until sentencing.
