GARY HOBBS FROM KEITH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN ESSEX

In a significant case that spanned over a decade, Gary Hobbs, aged 39 and residing in Keith, Banffshire, was convicted of multiple serious sexual offences involving a teenage victim. The crimes took place in Laindon, Essex, and the case only came to light after a detailed investigation that utilized forensic evidence to establish Hobbs's involvement.

According to court proceedings at Basildon Crown Court, Hobbs was found guilty of nine separate charges related to sexual activity with a minor. The offences occurred between late 2008 and 2009, a period during which the victim was just a teenager. The case gained particular attention because of the way the evidence was uncovered, highlighting the importance of forensic science in modern criminal investigations.

The investigation was initiated after the victim reported the abuse to the police in 2019. During the inquiry, investigators focused on a handwritten letter that the victim still possessed. This letter, written just before Valentine’s Day in 2008, contained a heartfelt message from Hobbs, professing his love for the victim. The letter was a crucial piece of evidence, as forensic specialists were able to extract fingerprints from it, which ultimately linked Hobbs to the crime.

The fingerprint analysis confirmed that Hobbs, who was living in Keith at the time, had sent the letter, establishing a direct connection to the offences. This forensic breakthrough played a pivotal role in securing his conviction. The case underscores the importance of meticulous evidence collection and analysis in bringing offenders to justice.

Hobbs is scheduled to be sentenced at Basildon Crown Court on 23 October.
