GARRY LOCKHART SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR FAMILY MURDER IN BONNYRIGG
Garry Lockhart, aged 33, was found guilty of the murder of his wife Janet Lockhart, aged 29, and their two-year-old son Michael at their residence in Bonnyrigg on December 28, 2013.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years.
Judge Lady Wise condemned his actions as 'wicked,' stressing that he had shown no concern for the suffering he caused or the value of their lives.
Lockhart confessed to strangling his wife following a dispute, claiming he had 'snapped.' Afterwards, he sat beside her body before deciding to smother his son and attempted to take his own life.
Evidence revealed that he had not initially planned to kill Michael but chose to do so after murdering his wife.
The conviction resulted from a trial at Edinburgh’s High Court, where he was convicted of both murders and his plea of diminished responsibility was rejected.
The court emphasized the catastrophic effects on the family and labeled the crime as 'particularly wicked and unfathomable.' Police Scotland acknowledged the family's distress and paid tribute to their resilience throughout the investigation.
