GARETH BENNETT EXETER CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL REVEALED

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Exeter, Gareth Bennett, a man with a long history of accessing illegal and highly disturbing child abuse material, was brought to justice after a detailed investigation into his online activities.

Over a span of 16 years, from 1997 to 2013, Bennett dedicated countless hours to searching for and downloading images and videos depicting the most heinous forms of child abuse.

His collection, which was stored across multiple hard drives, included a staggering total of over 120,000 images and numerous videos, many of which involved children as young as five years old.

The police raid on his residence in Exeter uncovered this extensive collection, revealing the depth of his disturbing interests.

Specifically, authorities found 15,386 still images and 178 movies classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse.

Additionally, there were 23,795 images and 95 movies categorized as B, along with 81,802 images and 30 movies in Category C.

The police also seized 192 cartoons depicting abuse, further illustrating the extent of Bennett’s illicit collection.

The investigation revealed that Bennett’s search history included terms associated with the worst forms of child exploitation, and the images involved children of both sexes, some of whom appeared distressed in the photographs.

Gareth Bennett, aged 33 and residing on Gloucester Road in Exeter, was charged with 24 offences related to the possession and creation of indecent images.

His arrest and subsequent court proceedings uncovered that he had been a user of such material since he was 16 years old.

The evidence presented in court detailed his long-standing obsession with these illegal images, which he accessed through peer-to-peer networks and other online platforms.

During the court hearing, Bennett admitted to all charges.

His mental health was a significant factor in the sentencing decision.

It was revealed that Bennett suffers from Asperger Syndrome, a condition that was diagnosed only after his arrest.

This condition has contributed to his social difficulties and his inability to interact normally with others.

Furthermore, Bennett has developed a condition called elective mutism, which has rendered him unable to speak for the past 12 months, a reaction to the shock of his arrest.

Judge Graham Cottle presided over the case and, after reviewing reports from mental health professionals, decided against imposing a custodial sentence.

Instead, he sentenced Bennett to 15 months in prison, suspended for two years.

The judge emphasized that, under different circumstances, a custodial sentence might have been appropriate, but Bennett’s mental health issues made prison treatment impractical.

As part of his sentence, Bennett was ordered to attend a one-on-one sexual offender’s treatment program supervised by a probation officer.

Additionally, he was placed under a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which grants authorities the ability to monitor his internet activity closely.

Bennett was also ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years.

Prosecutor Mr.

David Bowen highlighted the severity of the case, noting that police raided Bennett’s home in June of the previous year.

The investigation uncovered a vast amount of illegal material stored on his devices, with all storage devices found to be full.

Bennett’s full admission of guilt and his long-term online activity were also emphasized during the proceedings.

The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable victims from further harm.
