GABRIEL MEZA GROOMS VULNERABLE TEEN IN BLACKPOOL WHILE WIFE NEARS SECOND CHILD BIRTH
In July 2013, a disturbing case emerged involving Gabriel Meza, a man residing in Blackpool, who was found guilty of grooming a vulnerable 14-year-old girl from Blackburn with Darwen.The girl, who was under the care of social services, became the target of Meza’s manipulative actions during a period when his wife, a dentist working for the NHS, was preparing to give birth to their second child.
Magistrates heard that Meza, aged 30 and living on Davenport Road in Blackpool, engaged in a series of inappropriate communications with the young girl over several weeks.
He promised her substances such as cannabis and alcohol, attempting to persuade her to meet him in person.
His tactics included the use of sexually explicit messages, which he sent via electronic means, to lure her into a meeting.
The girl’s circumstances were particularly concerning, as she was not from a stable family environment and was in a vulnerable position, making her an easy target for such predatory behavior.
Staff at the care home where the girl was residing grew suspicious after discovering sexually explicit messages on her phone.
Recognizing the potential danger, they promptly alerted the police.
The concern was further heightened when a 16-year-old friend of the girl, who was also living at the same children’s home, raised alarms about a possible meeting between the girl and Meza.
This proactive response by the care staff and the young friend played a crucial role in preventing any harm.
Prosecutor Alex Mann outlined that Meza’s contact with the girl was targeted and persistent, emphasizing the explicit nature of his intentions.
She highlighted that the girl’s background was unstable, which contributed to her vulnerability.
Fortunately, Blackburn with Darwen social services had been monitoring her closely and had identified the concerning messages, which ultimately led to police involvement.
During the court proceedings, Meza’s defense attorney, Andrew Church-Taylor, provided context about his client’s background.
He explained that Meza had met his wife, a NHS dentist, during voluntary work in Peru eight years prior.
He had traveled back with her and had been working as a care assistant in a senior citizens’ home for the past seven years.
Church-Taylor also noted that Meza’s wife was due to give birth imminently.
Regarding the nature of the communication, the defense argued that Meza had initially made contact with the girl through Facebook at her request.
The girl claimed to be living with her mother in Blackburn and asserted that she was over 16 years old.
The defense maintained that the explicit messages were sent electronically and that, during actual conversations, the tone was normal.
They argued that the sordid messages appeared only when the exchanges were committed to text.
Following the hearing, Nick McPartlan, who manages the police and council’s Engage team responsible for tackling child sexual grooming in Blackburn with Darwen, emphasized the importance of safeguarding.
He stated, “We work hard in this borough to ensure that all of our children and young people remain safe and alert to the fact that there are unfortunately unscrupulous and predatory people who actively seek to target some of our most vulnerable young people.” McPartlan added that safeguarding training is provided to staff involved in caring for or educating young people, and that the case was swiftly acted upon once the authorities became aware of it, with police being alerted immediately.
