MIDLAND MAN JAILED FOR LIFE FOR WIFE’S MURDER
Florin Codreanu, a resident of the Midlands, has received a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering his wife, Maria. The conviction was reached following a jury trial at Stafford Crown Court, which lasted one week and concluded with a three-hour jury deliberation.
The judge, Mrs Justice Julia Macur, handed down a life sentence with a minimum period of 15 years before parole could be considered.
The court heard that Codreanu murdered his wife by strangulation during a fit of rage, possibly spurred by a mistaken suspicion that she was having an affair.
Despite his attempts to revive her as she lay dying in their bedroom on St Michael's Road, Maria succumbed to her injuries.
The judge described the case as tragic, emphasizing that Codreanu had killed someone he deeply loved, underscoring the tragic nature of the incident.
Maria, aged 27 and working as a part-time drama teacher, had been married to Codreanu since July 2007.
Although they had no children, they had discussed starting a family.
The court was told that Codreanu believed his wife was unfaithful and was planning to leave him, a belief that reportedly provoked his violent response.
At the time, Maria was employed as a drama teacher at Sutton Coldfield College, while in the days prior, Codreanu's fears about losing his engineering job due to rumors of layoffs contributed to his distress.
The prosecution argued that his anger was motivated by these false suspicions, while the defense claimed that his actions were impulsive.
Mrs Justice Macur observed that the killing appeared to have occurred spontaneously, and Codreanu was unable to prove whether his intent was to kill her or inflict serious harm, although the outcome was the same regardless.
