MUM GUILTY OF ALLOWING THE DEATH OF A CHILD
Update 16/04/2026: Amy Leigh Clark, 34, of Lichfield, was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment after being convicted of causing or allowing the death of her child, and two counts of causing or allowing serious physical harm................................................................................................................................................................................................................
A 34-year-old mother has been found guilty of causing or allowing the death of her own baby in a harrowing case that exposed a hidden world of violence, drugs and neglect behind closed doors.
Amy Clark was convicted of causing or allowing the death of five-week-old Darcy, as well as two counts of causing or allowing serious harm.
Prosecutors dropped murder and manslaughter charges during closing speeches, while she was cleared of two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent.
In court, Clark broke down, covering her face as the unanimous verdicts were delivered by a jury of eight women and four men.
Her co-accused, Sean Jefferson, sat in the dock shaking his head.
The trial heard baby Darcy, born prematurely in February 2022, had been subjected to repeated physical abuse during her short life.
By the time she was rushed to hospital on March 27, she had suffered a staggering 47 rib fractures.
She died just two days later from a catastrophic brain injury.
Prosecutors told the jury the fatal attack happened within an 18-minute window that morning, after Jefferson carried the tiny infant downstairs at their Staffordshire home.
The court heard the devastating injuries were consistent with a baby being violently shaken or having her head struck against a surface.
In a chilling claim, the prosecution said Jefferson may have silenced the crying newborn by fatally assaulting her.
“He put a stop to Darcy screaming,” the jury was told.
“He did that by shaking his five-week-old daughter violently.” Behind the façade of a “tidy and well-presented” home, the court heard a far darker reality.
Clark was described as projecting the image of a capable mother while secretly battling heavy alcohol use and cocaine abuse.
Jefferson was also a drug user, smoking cannabis during what was described as a volatile, toxic relationship filled with arguments and hostility.
Shockingly, while pregnant, Clark allegedly received a message from Jefferson threatening to “put you 6ft underground” if she harmed their unborn child through drinking.
Both parents were said to have continued using drugs throughout Darcy’s brief life.
In a striking moment, prosecutors pointed out that both Clark and Jefferson chose not to give evidence in their defence — despite being the only people who could explain what happened to their daughter.
“Their silence is deafening,” the court heard.
Judge Mrs Justice Brunner KC thanked the jury for their careful consideration and confirmed sentencing will take place at a later date.
