2008: MAN JAILED FOR INFECTING WOMAN WITH DEADLY HEPATITIS DURING SEX
Gloucestershire’s Crown Court has sentenced a Cheltenham resident to two years’ imprisonment after he admitted to infecting a woman from North Cotswolds with both chlamydia and Hepatitis B during their first sexual encounter. This incident is considered to be unique in Gloucestershire, as Ercan Yasar, age 29, who is employed in the hospitality sector and lives in Winchcombe Street, pleaded guilty to causing serious physical harm on September 15 of the preceding year.
Court hearings revealed that Yasar was informed he carried a dangerous, potentially fatal strain of Hepatitis B and knew he should use a condom every time.
Yet, he failed to disclose his health status to his partner, his girlfriend, before engaging in unprotected sex during a drinking session at his home.
Prosecutor Giles Nelson explained that the woman’s condition worsened significantly, resulting in hospitalization for ten days due to the infection.
The legal action followed after the woman and Yasar first met at a Cheltenham nightclub in August last year.
They maintained contact through texts and calls and started dating soon after.
Following a work lunch outing, the woman visited Yasar’s home, where they had unprotected sex once.
Police reports add that this case illustrates the first use in Gloucestershire of sophisticated DNA techniques to conclusively establish Yasar as the source of the infection, ruling out any other origin.
Authorities confirmed that Yasar will face deportation once he completes his sentence.
