ELIAS ARBERRY AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENCES IN PORTSMOUTH AND WESTON-SUPER-MARE
In a disturbing case that underscores the severity of sexual violence, Elias Arberry, a man from Portsmouth, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of carrying out multiple heinous offences. The sentencing took place at Taunton Crown Court on Friday, 14 October, where Arberry, aged 25, accepted responsibility for seven serious crimes that include four counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and an additional charge of wounding with intent.
According to court proceedings, Arberry's violent assault on the unnamed victim occurred in May this year.
During the attack, he inflicted substantial injuries on her, causing severe physical harm before subjecting her to a brutal rape.
The court heard how the assault was marked by violent force, leaving the victim physically wounded and emotionally traumatized.
Fortunately, amidst the chaos of the assault, the victim was able to escape when Arberry momentarily fell asleep, allowing her to seek help.
A extensive police operation was launched in response to the incident.
Law enforcement officers conducted a meticulous search lasting approximately 26 hours to apprehend Arberry, who had fled the scene.
His fugitive status was resolved when he was located at a hotel in Weston-super-Mare, where he was subsequently detained.
The investigation revealed the full extent of his crimes, culminating in the court's decision to hand down a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 and a half years before eligibility for parole.
In addition to his immediate prison sentence, Elias Arberry will remain a registered sex offender for life, a measure aimed at protecting the community from future harm.
The court also imposed a lifetime restraining order, barring him from making any contact with the victim to prevent further trauma.
The victim, profoundly affected by the ordeal, provided an impact statement that revealed the deep toll her experience has taken.
She expressed her feelings of loss and anger, stating: “At my age, most people are thinking about finding a partner to share their life with and settling down.
However, I also feel that opportunity has been taken away from me.” She described her daily mental anguish, confessing that the thoughts of what happened consume her every day and night.
“I feel I have really only scratched the surface of how this has affected me and how it will affect me probably for the rest of my life.” The victim’s mother also shared her distress in a heartfelt statement, describing her life since the attack as living a nightmare.
She revealed feelings of disbelief and helplessness, saying, “Since that day at the start of May, I literally feel like I have been living a nightmare.” She expressed her anguish over the rising awareness of violence against women and girls but admitted that she never anticipated something so horrific would happen to her own family.
With tearful honesty, she declared her feelings of hatred towards Arberry, stating: “I hate Arberry for what he has done to my daughter and to our family.” Detective Inspector Nadine Partridge, leading the investigation, highlighted the severity of the crimes committed by Arberry, describing the offences as some of the worst encountered in her policing career.
She emphasized the physical and mental trauma inflicted upon the victim and praised her bravery in cooperating with law enforcement.
“She has shown incredible bravery and strength in assisting the police in this investigation,” Partridge stated.
She also affirmed that the successful apprehension and conviction of Arberry would prevent him from causing further harm.
Gareth Giddings, representing the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the South West's Rape and Serious Sexual Offences unit, commended the collaborative effort between prosecutors and police officers.
He expressed appreciation for the victim’s willingness to come forward, which significantly contributed to securing a conviction.
Giddings reaffirmed the CPS’s dedication to delivering justice for victims of sexual violence, emphasizing the devastating impact these crimes have on individuals and their families.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the seriousness of sexual offences and the importance of rigorous law enforcement responses to protect vulnerable victims in Portsmouth, Weston-super-Mare, and beyond.
