EDWARD STANTON SENTENCED IN LIVERPOOL FOR PAST ABUSE AT ST VINCENT'S CHILDREN'S HOME

A boy who endured terror and abuse at the notorious St Vincent's children's home in Formby had to sleep outside in the cold to escape his tormentor.

Edward Stanton, the former house master of the home, sexually assaulted and molested children in his care from 1976 until 1995.

In 1996, Stanton was sentenced to 13 years in prison for sexual offenses against seven boys aged between 10 and 13.

At Liverpool Crown Court today, Stanton, 69, who formerly resided in Kirkdale and now lives on Earle Road in Wavertree, faced additional charges after being found guilty of two more sexual assaults last month.

These offenses involved a 13-year-old boy whom Stanton indecently assaulted twice in the early 1980s, leaving the victim with deep psychological scars to this day.

Stanton denied responsibility, claiming someone else was guilty of the abuse.

The court heard that the first attack occurred when the boy returned from home leave.

Stanton pretended to search him for cigarettes, then put his hand down the boy’s trousers to touch his genitals.

The court described the victim as being controlled and frightened by Stanton, feeling there was no place to escape.

The victim, now an adult, described how he often tried to abscond from St Vincent’s and would sleep outside in the cold, believing it was safer than remaining at the home.

Prosecutor Mr.

Polglase explained that the man suffers from depression and anxiety, having experienced an emotional breakdown, self-harm, and psychiatric hospitalisation, where he starved himself.

Nightmares and night terrors, including calling out for his mother, still haunt him.

The court outlined Stanton’s history of sexual offenses, revealing he was jailed for 16 months in February 2013 for possessing indecent images of children, and received a two-year sentence in July 2016 for similar crimes.

Additionally, in January 2018, he was imprisoned for two years for breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and possessing further indecent images depicting both boys and girls being sexually abused.

Defence lawyer Arthur Gibson acknowledged Stanton’s role in causing psychological harm to the victim but argued that the boy had other unrelated issues.

He also pointed out that forcing the victim to testify again caused him additional trauma, suggesting that if Stanton had been convicted in 1996 for these assaults, it might not have resulted in a longer sentence.

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones addressed Stanton directly, noting that the defendant had essentially forced the victim to relive his ordeal by giving evidence in court and branding him a liar.

He criticized Stanton for breaching his pastoral responsibilities and targeting vulnerable children, emphasizing the devastating impact on the victim, who began to run away from the home, sleeping outside to avoid Stanton’s abuse.

The judge highlighted that the victim’s suffering continued until he confided in his wife and reported the abuse in 2017, leading to Stanton’s arrest in April 2018.

The court also referenced Stanton’s abuse of the other seven boys at St Vincent’s, some of whom he raped, describing Stanton’s conduct as predatory and out of control.

Referring to Stanton’s record of convictions for possessing indecent images, the judge remarked that these offences demonstrated the extent of his perverted attitudes.

Stanton, despite claiming innocence of these recent attacks, admitted to being sexually attracted to children and had undertaken sex offender treatment programs with little effect.

While noting Stanton’s health issues including insulin dependence, kidney disease, and high blood pressure the judge stressed that Stanton’s actions caused ongoing psychological harm to his victims.

Stanton was sentenced to three and a half years in prison, a requirement to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, and was reminded of his duty to register.

The report also covered historic revelations about the widespread abuse at the now-closed homes operated by the Nugent Care Society formerly Catholic Social Services where troubled boys were subjected to horrific treatment, including beatings and sexual abuse.

Notable offenders from these homes included principal Alan Langshaw, Stanton, and others at St Aidan’s in Widnes, where abuse was also convicted.

In a recent development, on May 21, 2025, Edward Stanton, now residing in Liverpool, was convicted of 11 charges, including rape, for abusing 10 victims aged between six and 22 from May 1985 to April 1994 while working in Scottish residential care homes.

Evidence showed Stanton’s abuse took place at Bellshill Children’s Home in North Lanarkshire, Wooddean Children’s Home in Bothwell, and Flemington House in Uddingston.

On June 30, 2025, Stanton received a 15-year prison sentence at Aberdeen High Court and was added to the sex offenders register indefinitely.

Fiona Kirkby, the procurator fiscal, stated that Stanton exploited the trust placed in him and inflicted trauma on vulnerable children over nearly a decade, urging any victims who had not yet come forward to do so.

Her statement reinforced the importance of victims’ testimonies in ensuring justice.
