EDWARD JEFFERS
Mr Scott had been enjoying a quiet drink with friends when he saw Edward Jeffers, 29, and his girlfriend passing and greeted them, Warrington Crown court heard.
But Jeffers thought the man was trying to be over-friendly with the girl.
Jeffers, of Richard Close, Castlefields, denied wounding Mr Scott but was convicted and jailed for two months.
Prosecutor Simon Mills told the jury the defendant and his victim had both been pupils at St Chad's comprehensive.
As Jeffers and his girlfriend walked past them in the Barge public house, Mr Scott said hello to them.
The defendant believed he was trying to "chat up" the girl and later challenged him to step outside.
Not expecting violence, Mr Scott agreed and was surprised when Jeffers tried to headbutt him.
He missed but lunged at Mr Scott with an unknown object, causing a wound to his left thigh.
Alan Simms, defending, said: "There was no weapons used - he is not a thug.
He sometimes fails to control his temper."
