DR WAYNE DAVIS SHOCKS SALFORD WITH SEXUAL ASSAULTS DURING MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS
A medical professional from Salford has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting women under the guise of medical examinations. Dr Wayne Davis, aged 69, was convicted of multiple counts of assault by penetration and indecent assault, crimes that spanned over a decade from 1995 to 2006. The Manchester Crown Court heard harrowing details of how Davis exploited his position of trust to carry out unnecessary and invasive procedures on two women, with one victim recounting how he made inappropriate comments about teaching her how to pleasure her husband and questioned whether another woman was a virgin, all while performing examinations. One of the victims, a young woman seeking help for gynecological issues in 2006, was subjected to a sexual assault under the pretense of a medical procedure. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) revealed that Davis preyed on her innocence, falsely claiming he was conducting a necessary examination when, in fact, he sexually assaulted her. This incident left her distressed and worried for years before she finally reported the assault in May 2020. Her courage prompted an investigation that led to Davis’s arrest.
In a turn of events, a second woman, inspired by news of Davis’s arrest, came forward in June 2020 to report a similar incident dating back to 1995. She recounted how Davis performed an unnecessary gynecological examination on her, during which he sexually assaulted her. The police investigation uncovered these allegations, and Davis was taken into custody. During questioning, Davis denied any wrongdoing, asserting that all procedures he performed were medically necessary. However, he was convicted of assault by penetration and indecent assault, though he was acquitted of a separate count of assault by penetration, sexual assault, and causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.
Prosecutors confirmed that two other charges, including assault by penetration and attempting to cause a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, were not pursued. The police, led by Detective Sergeant Charlotte Sullivan, condemned Davis’s actions, describing them as “truly horrific and shocking.” Sullivan emphasized that Davis, in a position of authority, exploited women seeking medical help for personal and private issues, using his role for sexual gratification. She criticized his blatant disregard for the GP’s chaperone policy, which is designed to protect patients during examinations, noting that he sexually assaulted women alone in his workplace without regard for their wellbeing.
Gill Petrovic of the CPS highlighted that Davis was regarded as a trusted and highly respected figure within the community. Instead of fulfilling his professional duties ethically, he abused his position to commit serious sexual offences against women under his care. The court ultimately sentenced Davis to eight years in prison, marking a significant victory for justice and a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding patients from abuse by those in positions of power.
