DEREK EAGLESTONE FROM BIRCHINGTON CONVICTED OF CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN CANTERBURY

In a significant legal development, Derek Eaglestone, a resident of Birchington, has been found guilty of multiple child sex offences that date back over five decades. The case, which has garnered considerable attention, was heard at Canterbury Crown Court, where the jury reached a verdict after a detailed trial.

Eaglestone, a man who was once highly regarded in his community, was recognized for his contributions to society through his work with St John Ambulance. In the 1990s, he was awarded an MBE for his dedicated service as a superintendent within the charity, a role that involved overseeing ambulance operations and supporting community health initiatives. His reputation was further solidified by his involvement in local sports and community activities in Birchington.

However, the veneer of respectability was shattered when allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced, leading to a criminal trial that revealed disturbing details. The victim, who came forward to recount his experiences, testified that a seemingly innocuous gift of a St John Ambulance badge, given to him a few years prior, had unexpectedly triggered memories of the abuse he endured decades earlier. The court heard that the abuse occurred during the 1960s and 1970s, a period when the victim was a young cadet at Hither Green in south London.

According to the victim, Eaglestone, who was then serving as a senior figure within the organization, had singled him out for inappropriate attention. The initial acts, described as “a tickling game” conducted in the back of a St John ambulance vehicle, gradually escalated into more sinister and abusive encounters. The victim recounted that these incidents left a lasting impact, and the memories resurfaced many years later, prompting him to seek justice.

The court proceedings resulted in Eaglestone being convicted on four counts of indecent assault. The jury, however, acquitted him of three other charges related to sex offences, indicating that the evidence was sufficient for some crimes but not all. Eaglestone, who was remanded on bail pending sentencing, is scheduled to be sentenced next month. As part of his legal obligations, he has also been ordered to register as a sex offender, a measure that underscores the severity of the court’s findings.

The case has sparked discussions about safeguarding and the importance of addressing historical abuse allegations, especially within organizations that serve vulnerable populations. The conviction marks a significant moment in the ongoing effort to bring justice to victims of childhood abuse, regardless of how much time has passed since the offences occurred.
