DENNY LAKENVELDER FROM CHELTENHAM ESCAPES PRISON DESPITE DOWNLOADING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the community of Cheltenham, Denny Lakenvelder, a 34-year-old resident of Wordsworth Avenue, was found guilty of possessing and downloading indecent images of children.The incident came to light in May 2022 when authorities revealed the details of the investigation and subsequent court proceedings.
On December 8, 2021, police officers executed a search warrant at Lakenvelder’s home following intelligence received from the National Crime Agency.
The agency had flagged a device at the property that was suspected of downloading illegal content.
According to prosecutor Neil Treharne, the NCA had informed the police that during October of the previous year, Lakenvelder had repeatedly downloaded indecent images of children from the Kik social media platform.
When law enforcement officials arrived at the residence, they seized a mobile phone belonging to Lakenvelder for forensic analysis.
The results of this examination were deeply disturbing.
The device contained numerous images classified as Category A, which is considered the most severe form of child exploitation material.
These images depicted children as young as one year old, with some being subjected to rape or torture.
In addition to these, there were over 100 other images categorized as B and C, indicating varying degrees of indecency and exploitation.
During police interviews, Lakenvelder admitted to downloading images of very young children.
He confessed to possessing a total of 163 images, including 56 in Category A, 67 in Category B, and 40 in Category C.
His admission confirmed the severity of the material found on his device.
At Gloucester Crown Court, Judge Advocate Alastair McGrigor addressed Lakenvelder directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.
The judge stated, “You have indulged in possessing indecent images of children.
This offence crosses the custody threshold,” indicating that the case was serious enough to warrant a custodial sentence.
However, in a somewhat lenient decision, the judge sentenced Lakenvelder to six months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years.
The court also ordered him to participate in 20 programme sessions and complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities.
Additionally, Lakenvelder was mandated to perform 180 hours of unpaid community work.
To further protect the community and prevent future offenses, the court imposed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
This order restricts Lakenvelder’s internet usage and access to certain online platforms.
Furthermore, he was placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of seven years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
While the sentence may seem lenient given the nature of the crimes, the court’s measures aim to balance punishment with rehabilitation, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children and preventing recidivism.
