CARMARTHENSHIRE MAN SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS FOR STRANGLING PARTNER IN DOMESTIC ABUSE CASE
An individual responsible for strangling his partner at a property in Carmarthenshire has received a prison term.Dean Rees, 48 years old, forced his way into his partner’s home in Llanelli during the early hours of September 22 last year, making accusations against her before physically restraining her twice.
During the assault, the victim was able to dial 999 and leave the line open as events unfolded.
The emergency call operator overheard her pleading, “Stop…I haven’t done anything,” and requesting that someone leave her house.
Police officers responded promptly to the address, where they observed that the victim appeared visibly shaken and was hesitant to give a detailed statement due to fears for her safety.
With police reassurance, she cooperated and described the attack.
Rees, who resides on Caeconna Road, Swansea, was quickly apprehended within half an hour of the emergency call.
He faced charges of intentional strangulation, a specific offence under the Domestic Abuse Act enacted in 2022, aimed at addressing cases where perpetrators evade punishment due to the absence of visible injuries.
On May 5, he appeared in Swansea Crown Court and was sentenced to two years imprisonment.
A five-year restraining order was also issued, prohibiting him from contacting the victim.
The police have provided further practical support for the victim, who has been working with an independent domestic violence advocate since the incident.
The case emphasizes the importance of the Domestic Abuse Act and underscores efforts to combat domestic violence and ensure victim safety.
